No Outside Credential Was Good Enough. So We Built Our Own.
Atomic Athlete Coaches Certification
At Atomic Athlete, we hold all of our athletic trainers in Austin, TX to a standard of excellence. After years of attending seminars and accruing certifications, we could not find a credential system that met our standards. So we built our own. In 2015, we developed our own certification process with five components we believe are critical to be a successful Atomic Athlete coach.
Coaching Seminar
Candidates attend a seminar where they will learn the core principles of exercise science, programming, and effective coaching.
Coaching Exam:
Coaching is an art. Candidates must be able to run groups of athletes through complex training sessions, while clearly communicating expectations and instructions. Coaches must be able to provide exercise substitutions, and scale training sessions appropriately. The Coaching Test is a progressive series of evaluations over 15 training sessions.
Practical Exam:
Exercise instruction is a critical skill that all coaches must have. Candidates must be able to correctly teach, coach, and correct all of the foundational barbell lifts along with primary supplemental exercises.
Written Exam:
Candidates have 90 minutes to complete our written test and must score 90% or higher. The exam covers energy system development, adaptation theory, exercise science, and programming.
Physical Exam:
We believe that coaches lead by example, in both knowledge and physical ability. Each coach must pass our rigorous physical assessment outlined below.
- — Clean and Jerk 1.15 x bodyweight (0.75 for females)
- — 15x strict pull ups (5x for females)
- — 20x reps Front Squat at bodyweight (0.75 for females)
- — 1000 meter run in under 4 minutes
- — 70x Sandbag Getups in 10 minutes with 80lbs (60lbs for females)
- — 3 mile run in 21:30 minutes
