The Awakening is the first step into becoming a more competent human being.

 

This one day event focuses on building a solid fundamental grasp of the 3 primary pillars of competence: handgun proficiency, combatives, and trauma management.

 

Perfect for athletes of all ability levels, this event will bring together some of the best instructors in Texas for one of the most action packed days of your life.

 

Handgun

Taught by Alex Acosta, a sponsored national level USPSA shooter, this block will level up your marksmanship skill regardless of experience level. We’ll break the handgun portion into two different evolutions. In the morning we’ll go through an in depth review of handgun fundamentals that will not only teach new shooters the basics but reinforce and elaborate on existing skills. In the evening we’ll return to the range and move onto more advanced skills such as moving and shooting, target transitions, as well as basic low light skills.

 

Combatives

Taught by Randy Vera, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu blackbelt and owner of Austin Kickboxing Academy, this block will teach the basics of striking, clenching, positional dominance, and basic submissions. The block will focus on practical application in regards to self defense vs. sport.

 

Trauma Management

Taught By Justin Hurzeler, a SWAT Medic in Williamson County, this block will teach attendees the basics of managing life threatening traumatic injuries. Justin will cover how to deal with injuries from a variety of mechanisms as well as how to interact with local first responders and EMS.

Schedule of Events

Each block of training will last approximately 1-2 hours and is held in various locations in South Austin.

8:00-10:00: Handgun Proficiency – Fundamentals

10:30-12:00: Combatives

12:00-1:30: Lunch

1:30-3:30: Trauma Management

4:00-7:30: Handgun Proficiency – intermediate skills

8:00-10:00: Group Dinner

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

  • Pistol – semiautomatic with a capacity of at least 10 rounds (no revolvers)
  • Retention holster that allows the shooter to run without losing positive control of the firearm
  • Magazines (3) and magazine holder (holds 2)
  • 300 rounds of pistol ammunition – not hollow points, just the cheap stuff
  • Sturdy Belt (worn with pants that have belt loops)
  • Flashlight or Weapon mounted light
  • Headlamp
  • Ear and Eye protection
  • Outdoor clothes / Hat / shoes that are durable
  • Water bottle

FAQ

I’ve never shot a gun before, can I come? 
Yes, we’ll start with the most basic fundamentals before moving on to more advanced skills!

 

I’m an intermediate level shooter, will I still get something out of the pistol work? 
Absolutely. Our instructors will cover fundamental details that many “experienced” shooters have never heard of. During the evening portion we’ll cover more advanced skills as well!

 

Do I need a Pistol?
Yes, a defensive pistol such as a Glock, Springfield XD, Smith and Wesson M&P, and a Sig 226 are all examples of good pistols to bring. Do not bring a revolver. If you don’t have a pistol we do rent them. Cost is $25 for the event.

 

How physically demanding is the event?
The most demanding portion of the day will be the hand to hand portion. Most of the skills taught will be drilled and practiced at slower speeds / intensities. Combat speed drills will be very limited and optional. Our primary goal is for you to leave the event with some tangible skills, not a sore neck.

 

Can I do this event with my son / daughter?
Yes, but they must be 15 years or older.

 

Is the event rain or shine?
Yes. The range will be the only outdoor event. Check the weather and make sure you have proper gear to keep you warm, focused, and comfortable.

 

Can I attend some events and not others?

Yes, but the registration price is the same.

If I sign up but cannot attend what happens? Is there a return policy?

You can either transfer your attendance to another person or take a refund. The refund policy is below.

  • 60+ days = 100% refund
  • 30 – 60 days = 50% refund
  • < 30 days = 25% refund
  • < 14 days = 0% refund
